One thing that makes me extremely happy is when I see kids taking photos. Something takes control of me and I become the spectator almost the subject for them. Photography is an effective tool in igniting children’s imagination, self-esteem and to empower. Put a camera in a child’s hand and you will be amazed to see what we as adults are unable to capture.   — with  Moe Elrifai  at  Avukana Buddha statue .

Generally if I am approached by a stranger I automatically assume they want something. It is easy to forget that when in another part of the world it could be different, or that back at home at the very least I need to remind myself to let people in, even if they aren’t familiar or make me uncomfortable.

Our new friend Ratna made us laugh and taught us that knowledge is the biggest gift you can share. Persistence even in the most awkward and challenging moments with strangers are the most fulfilling, I am glad we let this stranger in and we were lucky enough to learn about the history of  Sigiriya .

One thing which struck me in Sri Lanka is the way children play and what makes them happy. Waiting at Hatton Station I was watching kids interact. I saw new friendship blossom over school books and comparing colourful pencil cases. It all reminded me of my childhood, a time where face to face interaction was what we knew best. I am happy knowing the more fulfilling way of communicating is still the way in Sri Lanka. I hope that these kids when older appreciate it for what it is, just as I hope many of us now do.

Waiting for my train to Ella from  Hatton, Sri Lanka .
Had just waved goodbye to some new friends from Spain. The next train to Ella was delayed and I was a little annoyed because of it. I now realise and am reminded that things happen for a reason. I now had more time at the station and met a beautiful family, my friend travelling with me spent time feeding the stray dogs determined to save them all .
I am now grateful for the delay as I was able to capture this image, which still remains a favourite. Lesson learnt, just go with it and don’t rush.
